Ashley Olsen is a famous American actress, best known as half of the child actress duo (with her sister) of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. She and her sister played the youngest member of the family on the popular sitcom "Full House". With her sister she has acted in many television programs and family marketed movies, and the two of them are at the center of a small media empire.
Ashley Olsen was born in Sherman Oaks, California on June 13, 1986. When she was nine months old, she and her sister Mary-Kate began appearing on the show "Full House". They were hired as twins to portray the character of Michelle Tanner, because labor laws for child actors restricted the number of hours per day that any one child could work. "Full House" was extremely popular in the United States through the late eighties and early nineties. The show went on for eight years, allowing Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen to grow up with the role, and the two of them starred in many family oriented straight-to-video movies during this period, establishing a strong family market.
After "Full House" ended, Ashley Olsen and Mary Kate expanded their business empire, putting their image on all kinds of merchandise from clothes to perfume to additional movies and video games. They appeared in a video series called "The Adventures of Mary-Kate and Ashley", as well as several television shows. While none of them were as successful as "Full House", this was still a profitable time for the Olsen twins. Movies that they appeared in during this period included "Holiday in the Sun", "When in Rome", "The Challenge", and "New York Minute", movies which sold well to pre-teens despite tended to be critically panned.
After high school, the pair chose to go to college instead of pursuing a full-time acting career and they enrolled in New York University, though Mary-Kate has since decided to return to the west coast and continue her show business career.
